History

The original route from the industrial midlands to London was via the Oxford Canal onto the River Thames at Oxford and then down the River Thames to Brentford. Opening the Grand Union Canal reduced the distance travelled by 60 miles and also provided a broad beam connection meaning that working boats could use the locks with their butty beside them rather than having to go through 2 lock operations as on the narrow Oxford Canal.
