The Lee Navigation joins Hertford to the River Thames at Bow Creek and is the canalized River Lee. The River Lee was used for transportation in Roman times and the first major improvements to navigation were carried out in 1425. The navigation was further steadily improved throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
