Starting from Limehouse the River Thames passes by too many places of interest to list them all here. The following places are some of my favourites.

Globe Theatre

The original theatre was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's company the Chamberlains Men. It was destroyed by fire in 1613. The modern version was built in 1997, 750 feet from the original site.

It is possible to see a play there for only £5 per ticket provided you are prepared to stand in the area in front of the stage.

London Eye

The Eye is 443 feet high and is the tallest of its kind in Europe.

It was opened in 1999.

Palace of Westminster

The original building on this site was destroyed by fire in 1834. Work on the current building designed by architects Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin started in 1840. The main building work took 30 years to complete by which time both of the designers had died. Decorative work to complete the building went on well into the 20th century.

St. Thomas' Hospital

It was founded in the 12 century in Southwark and moved to its present site in 1871. Florence Nightingale had her school of nursing here and to this day nurses at St Thomas' are known as "Nightingales."

Tate Britain

This was formerly the Tate Gallery funded by Sir Henry Tate on the profit from sugar cubes.. He donated his own collection of British paintings to form the nucleus of the early displays.

Battersea Power Station

This was actually 2 power stations of identical design. The A station was built in the 1930's and the B station in the 1950's. The station was decommissioned in 1983 and is now a grade II listed building. It is the largest brick building in Europe and is currently subject to several applications to turn it into leisure and housing/office facilities.
